The text consists of 1,875 verses, chiefly borrowed from the Rig Veda. Thus arose the second compilation, the Sama Veda. As the Aryans settled down and a ritualistic religion developed, the need was felt for a hymn which could be sung and set to tune. They are poems of praise to the beauty of the earth and nature and its power.Ĥ. The Rig Vedic hymns, in the words of Rabindranath Tagore, are “a poetic testament of a people’s collective reaction to the wonder and awe of existence”.
